The Winners

Lois Openda:

It was ironic that the standout forward wasn’t wearing a PSG shirt Sunday night. Openda exploited the spaces left between Ramos and Mukiele to terrorize the visiting back line. While he only touched the ball 24 times, he set up one and scored his eighth goal of the season.

There were no real secrets about Openda’s operation, but PSG never really had an answer. Openda had room all evening because their back four pushed up, but played too wide. As strange as it was to see PSG defeated by such a predictable formula, Openda’s performance was truly beautiful.

The Ligue 1 title race:

Before the season began, there wasn’t intended to be anything approximating a Ligue 1 title competition. Just too successful are PSG. The competition is too ordinary. And there may not even be one now. With at least three key players absent, this PSG team is far from being at its peak.

However, Lens also had a chance to make things interesting because they were able to reduce PSG’s lead to four points. Indeed, they carried it out. PSG will probably win because they are stalled (it is difficult to imagine them losing another game). But things might get interesting if Lens keeps winning.

The Losers

Sergio Ramos:

One tackle from Ramos perfectly sums up his performance. The centre back dived in front of Luis Openda in an attempt to block a long pass up the field. He did this after finding himself on the wrong side of the striker. Ramos’ foot sank into the ground as he slid, however, and the ball sailed a metre beyond. Ramos had no choice but to accept Openda’s goal.

He was tortured all night long by one of the league’s top attackers. It was believed that the 36-year-old might regain some of his prior form after taking six weeks off. Since the World Cup break, he has struggled and no longer possesses the extra burst of speed needed to compensate for his poor positioning.

Fabian Ruiz:

It’s challenging to discern exactly what Fabian Ruiz adds to PSG’s midfield. The Spaniard failed to establish a foothold in the match after being given his second consecutive start. Fabian needed to give the team some offensive oomph since Messi was still out and Neymar was suspended. He only completed two passes into the final third, was mainly ineffectual, and unable to regularly link up with PSG’s attacking pair. Additionally, he didn’t do much defensively, sometimes leaving Nordi Mukiele alone against two Lens players on the PSG right.

Kylian Mbappe match performance:

What an unpleasant evening it was for the Frenchman. PSG was open about their strategy on Sunday night because it was obvious from the start that they would try to rely on Mbappe. Lens made the necessary adjustments and effectively removed the winger from the contest. There were a few brief flashes of class: shots at acute angles and spins in confined spaces. But a clear opportunity passed him by, and as the final buzzer sounded, he cut a disappointed figure. Mbappe overlooked his attacking teammates without a doubt.

PSG Ratings: Defence

Lens’ first shot should have been handled better because the goalie parried the ball into harm’s way. No one can be held responsible for the other two. Other than that, he had a few errant passes.

Was the PSG back four’s most effective forward, and he displayed some amazing bursts of speed to recover.

Ramos, Sergio (4/10).

Openda scored because he was caught on the wrong side of the striker, allowing the striker to score. After a significant bump inside the penalty box, a penalty may have been awarded. Additionally, no run for Lens’ third was detected. Uneasy night.

After a futile slide tackle, Lens was sent in the wrong direction for his second. I was horrified all night by OpenDA.

Midfield

Fabian Ruiz (5/10) at midfield

Given his second consecutive start, it’s unclear exactly what he offers the midfield trio. Substituted after less than an hour, meritoriously.

6/10 for Danilo Pereira

Added stability at position No. 6, but wasn’t quite at his best. Dependable with the ball, finishing all but one of his passes. He was, however, caught out of position for Lens’ second goal and, after 59 minutes, his legs gave out.

Despite having three chances, his 400th PSG appearance ended in a sad loss.
